AI Is Making Average Work Look Excellent. And Excellent Work Look Average.
AI has made it incredibly easy to make average work look excellent. But it’s also making excellent work look average. I recently spent hours on a report I was proud of, using AI to challenge and sharpen my thinking. The first reaction I got from my colleague was “it sounds like AI.” I think the assumption was that I hadn’t really done the work. That got me thinking about how quickly our beliefs about AI are changing how we judge quality, effort and expertise. Polish tells us less than it used to. Judgment matters more.
